Value is referred to the regard someone or something is held to deserve; the importance, worth or usefulness of something. It’s the principles or standards of behavior; one’s judgment of what is important in life; standards or ideals with which we evaluate actions, people, things or situations.
Self-value is a feeling of being happy with yourself, your ability, your character and your choices. Beauty, honesty, justice, peace, generosity are all examples of values that most people endorse. Values are of different categories, types and varieties but we’ll just be focusing on three major ones:
- PERSONAL VALUES;
Anything “Personal” means something belonging to or affecting a particular person rather than anyone else. Concerning one’s private life, relationships and emotions rather than one’s public life. So Personal values are values endorsed by an individual i.e. the things that are important to us, the characteristics and behaviors that motivate us and guide our decisions. For instance: “Spending time with family”, “Focusing on achieving your goals”, Being honest” or “Being kind to those in need”. When talking about personal values, we don’t refer to material things instead characteristics or ways of behavioral patterns in the world.
- MORAL VALUES;
Morals are things concerned with the principles of right and wrong behavior; holding or manifesting high principles for proper conduct. Moral values help determine what is right or wrong, they help shape the character and personality of an individual. They are values accepted generally in the world which strengthens the behaviors of people naturally. For instance: Integrity, loyalty, truthfulness, honesty, determination, giving respect, freedom, equality etc. are values which every individual should adopt and uphold as part of their lifestyle.
Following moral principles takes a lot of patience and sacrifice but it helps to analyze a problem and find accurate solution. Your moral values or standards are the reason why people trust and put their faith in you, they help us live without fear of being judged and make us stand out in the crowd.
- AESTHETIC VALUES;
Aesthetic means a set of principles underlying the work of an artist or artistic movement; it’s concerned with beauty or the appreciation of beauty. They’re values associated with the evaluation of art work or beauty; the value of a property based on its appearance.
There’s a popular saying that states that “People will most likely see you before they hear you” i.e. people will often rate you first based on your outward appearance before taking time to know you inwardly. This basically has to do with your appearance in public places, for instance; Fashion, walking, eating, sitting style, composure, actions and reactions etc. Even though this type of value is important, it’s more important to do it your way because a lot of us tend to put on pretentious acts or behaviors when it comes to public appearances in order to basically please people who might or might not even care about us.
Values are very important aspects of every individual’s life, they’re like fingerprints, no two persons have the same fingerprints but you leave them all over everything you touch. When your values are clear to you, making decisions becomes a whole lot easier because they give you direction.
What the Bible Says About Self-Value;
“For you did form my inward parts, you did knit me together in my mother’s womb.
I will confess and praise you for you are fearful and wonderful and for the awful wonder of my birth! Wonderful are your works, and that my inner self knows right well.
My frame was not hidden from you when I was being formed in secret [and] intricately and curiously wrought [as if embroidered with various colors] in the depths of the earth [a region of darkness and mystery]” – Psalm 139:13-15 [AMP]
“Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? And [yet] not one of them is forgotten or uncared for in the presence of God.
But [even] the very hairs on your head are all numbered. Do not be struck with fear or seized with alarm; you are of greater worth than many [flocks] of sparrows.” – Luke 12:6-7 [AMP]
“Do not be conformed to this world [this age], [fashioned after and adapted to its external, superficial customs], but be transformed (changed) by the [entire] renewal of your mind [by its new ideals and its new attitude], so that you may prove [for yourselves] what is good and acceptable and perfect will of God, even the thing which is good and acceptable and perfect [in His sight for you] – Romans 12:2 [AMP]”
“No temptation [regardless of its source] has overtaken or enticed you that is not common to human experience [nor is any temptation unusual or beyond human resistance]; but God is faithful [to His word—He is compassionate and trustworthy], and He will not let you be tempted beyond your ability [to resist], but along with the temptation He [has in the past and is now and] will [always] provide the way out as well, so that you will be able to endure it [without yielding, and will overcome temptation with joy]. – 1 Corinthians 10:13 [AMP]”
“For we are His workmanship [His own master work, a work of art], created in Christ Jesus [reborn from above—spiritually transformed, renewed, ready to be used] for good works, which God prepared [for us] beforehand [taking paths which He set], so that we would walk in them [living the good life which He prearranged and made ready for us]. – Ephesians 2:10 [AMP]”
